The University of Alabama has canceled three days of classes so that students and faculty can attend the BCS Championship football game in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 7.

In a memo to faculty, UA Vice President and Provost Judy Bonner writes that "given the number of students who have to be in Pasadena ... and the number of faculty, staff and students who want to be there, we are dismissing classes on Jan. 6-8. Students should expect additional assignments to make up for the lost class time."

Top-ranked Alabama will play the University of Texas for the Bowl Championship Series National Championship.

(And there is an argument that a big reason that there is not a playoff is because it would take up more time for classes for both players and students. Looks like Alabama doesn't care all that much.) -- timbe2

  1. That's ridiculous. If you want to make your school look like a sub-par institution, go ahead and cancel class. Seriously, there are these things called TV's that people can use to be at the game...They'll probably save a LOT of money too if they were to just stay home and watch on TV.
I may be biased because my school is not heavily involved in sports. And if I were a student I would probably more than likely appreciate the free days off.
But seriously, is Texas canceling class?

  2. I can't believe class would be cancelled for a sporting event!

Very nice blog. A lot of things to think about. Even "non sporty" people can enjoy the posts, and think about the issue at hand.

    Well done.

  3. Zim -- It is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. And I have not heard anything about Texas canceling school. What really gets to me is that the people who are against a playoff are worried both students and athletes will miss more school, when in reality kids miss school for BCS bowls anyways.

Kathy -- I know, its quite unbelievable they would cancel school. Thank you for the comments!

  4. Thats really awesome they got school off. As much as it wastes time in the semester, I would LOVE if my school cancelled class so we could watch basketball games! They did last year when they made it to the final four, and apparently it was a big week for Villanova. It isn't great in consideration to their education, but in regards to school spirit, and to give their students something to brag about, I'm sure it was a fun week for the students.

And also, the argument against the playoff because of lost school time shouldn't stop them. A playoff would make so much more sense.

  6. Great CT Intro. Pretty impressive resume! Don't think it's lame that the school is canceling classes (which the students will need to make up) for the title game. It's not like the Bowl is across the 405 or the 210! Go Bama.

  7. This is true. Alabama did say that the students would have to make up the classes/homework, but if I were a student there, it would be totally worth it. :) I think i am just jealous.

  8. Three days of classes....why do they have the game on Thursday? A great deal of students and faculty will want to be there so it makes sense. At Alabama they live football (see video). It could really help to have that sea of red, the 12th man on the field.

  9. Good point about the playoffs stretching over time and disrupting many days of school potentially. Of course that is if you care to follow the team.

  10. Very true. Bama has a very strong fan base and will do anything to get it fans/supporters to the game. Texas and Alabama will be a great game in Pasadena, Ca.
